Aweza App Aims To Provide A Solution To The Language Barrier Faced In Many Sectors Of Society. Aweza is an internationally award-winning tech-based initiative that strives to inspire & empower South Africans to overcome language barriers across all sectors of society. Language barriers can stunt learning in education. With its plugin, in partnership with FastMaths Online, Aweza is unlocking learning potential for non-first language English speaking learners.
In the healthcare sector, medical practitioners and patients often do not speak the same language as each other. This can often result in inefficient patient management. Using its multi-lingual communication framework for mobile, AwezaMed seeks to address this problem.
Currently in the pilot stages, AwezaMed is a voice-enabled lingual communication app which helps health-care practitioners and patients understand each other better. AwezaMed incorporates the following components: A database of 1800+ questions, reassurances, explanations, patient responses & key vocabulary are curated through a vigorous refinement process with the oversight of a team of medical professionals; recognition and transcription of speech in any of the 11 official South African languages into text; taking the input text in the source language and translating it into the target language and taking the translated text and synthesising it in the target language.
The company will pilot the application in 2 sites per language (English-Afrikaans, English-isiZulu and English-isiXhosa). The pilots will commence once approval from the clinic/hospital or private consulting rooms has been received. The pilot will run for a fixed period and will entail the identified HCP using the application to communicate with a patient. The outcome of the pilot will be used as a basis for improvements to the application and possible roll out to further sites.
Aweza’s multilingual communication mobile application provides a framework to assist its users in learning communication across language barriers. With simple navigation, search and voice support, app offers a power, yet easy-to-use experience. Its TMS allows it to efficiently create and maintain a massive database of terminology along with any relevant definitions, examples, synonyms and images in any supported language. In collaboration with the Council For Scientific and Industrial Research, Aweza’s tools make use of their state of the art Text To Speech synthesis, Speech Recognition and Machine Translation for South African languages.
