Entrepreneur Theo Baloyi Shares What Entrepreneurs Need To Look Out For When Hiring Family And Friends In Their Small Businesses. Getting the right workers for one’s business is crucial for the business’ survival as this will determine whether the workers that have been hired are competent to execute the job that is required.

Some entrepreneurs prefer to hire people that they know and are close to such as friends a d family members, to them this reduces the trust barrier and makes an easy and free flowing working relationship. However, hiring family members and friends can also have some negative effects to it as, some family members or friends aren’t qualified to do the job, therefore entrepreneurs should also consider what the person they are hiring is bringing to the table.

In an interview with Nedbank, South African entrepreneur Theo Baloyi shared what he thinks entrepreneurs should look out for when they are considering hiring family members or friends. He said, “I think it depends, do they have the same values as you? Do they share the same vision as you? Do they have the same work ethic as you? So you need to be aligned with that. In both Instances I think sometimes it’s beneficial and it has its own advantages and disadvantages, but the most important thing is that everyone needs to be aligned to the core vision of the business and have the best interests of the business.”

Baloyi emphasised that when entrepreneurs want to hire a family member or friend, they should make sure that they have the same vision and values as the business. This will allow the employees to do their best to make sure that they company reaches the goals it has set. Entrepreneurs need to make sure that they do not just hire any type of friend or family, the should consider friends or family members that are willing to work towards the vision of the company.
