Local Gaming Startup Teams Up With Tropika Island Of Treasure To Gamify SA’s Top Reality Show. SpaceSalad Studios, a rising star in the South African gaming scene, has partnered with World Sports Betting to collaborate on a first-of-its kind initiative with Tropika Island of Treasure. The wildly popular reality show premieres on Saturday, 28 September at 6:30 pm on SABC 3. This collaboration is set to redefine how audiences engage with reality TV by offering an interactive, second-screen experience, aimed at transforming passive viewing into an immersive event. Through this initiative, viewers can now actively participate in some of the challenges of the show via mobile games developed by the gaming start up.

“From the outset, our goal was to make the viewing experience more engaging by giving viewers the chance to interact with the same challenges they see on screen,” says Thabo Tsolo, CEO and game designer at SpaceSalad Studios. “We pitched the concept of mobile games that mirror the physical challenges contestants face on the show. It is a unique concept where players can be fully immersed in the action while watching from home.”

The partnership with the reality TV show represents a significant milestone for the gaming startup, which was made possible through their venture builder partner and investor Aions Creative Technology, who connected them with World Sports Betting (WSB), the gaming sponsor for the reality TV show.

“While World Sports Betting is widely recognised in the betting industry, we are committed to fostering growth and innovation in the South African business landscape, particularly through our social development initiatives. Partnering with SpaceSalad Studios aligns with our goal to invest in local SMEs that have the potential to disrupt and innovate their industries. Gaming is evolving rapidly, and we are excited to support this project that blends sports, entertainment, and technology,” says Charlotte Archer, Marketing Manager at WSB.

Rethabile Koma, Lead Programmer at SpaceSalad Studios, says the team faced several hurdles while developing this second-screen experience. “One of the biggest challenges was creating six interconnected games with vastly different concepts, all while ensuring they were optimised for play in a web browser. We also needed to ensure that the games captured the essence of the show’s challenges, since viewers would be playing in tandem with the televised episodes, it was crucial that players experience on their phones was a genuine extension of the show.”

Looking forward, SpaceSalad Studios sees this as a significant step toward more immersive entertainment experiences. The partnership between the gaming studio and World Sports Betting on Tropika Island of Treasure has now set a precedent for future collaborations in gamifying television and other forms of media

This could be the beginning of something much bigger,” says Tsolo. “We have already seen how engaged viewers become when they are given the chance to interact directly with the content. We think this project will serve as a case study on the impact of gamification on audience retention and growth. We are excited about the future possibilities, not just for SpaceSalad Studios but for the industry. We are ready to take the South African gaming industry to new heights.”
