Building Thunder: The Story of Sibu Mabena and the Rise of Duma Collective

Building Thunder: The Story of Sibu Mabena and the Rise of Duma Collective. Sibu Mabena’s entrepreneurial spirit took root early. From dancing in high school to winning as a choreography coach, she absorbed the hustle of business. Moving from freelance events to creating a full creative agency, she harnessed that performance instinct into a brand rooted in authenticity and grit.

Turning Passion into Enterprise

In 2014, Sibu founded Mbuduma Communications, named for her clan but she soon realised that the name was difficult to say. In 2017, she launched Duma Collective, inspired by Nguni words meaning thunder or desire. That name became a reflection of the agency’s energy and ambition.

Strategic Name and Branding Decisions

Choosing Duma presented both clarity and character. “Duma Collective” evoked boldness and cultural resonance, making it memorable. The name change reinforced her brand identity and set the tone for a team built on values and impact .

Scaling Through Culture and Context

Duma Collective took on high-energy clients, Sony, Global Citizen, Black Coffee and events like Music Is King, Fill Up The Dome and the Global Citizen Festival. When COVID lockdown hit, they pivoted, creating 16 episodes of Lockdown House Party in seven days, a bold move that showcased adaptability and creativity under pressure.

Building a Resilient and Inclusive Team

By 2019 Duma had 9 staff. Within two years, growth hit 44 employees, including hiring interns with the aim of converting them into full-time talent, solidifying Duma as a platform for young creatives. In 2024, after surviving their toughest year, Duma retained and absorbed four interns into permanent roles, a testament to leadership and people focus.
