Checkers Hyper Introduces In-Store Nespresso Experience in South African Retail First

Checkers Hyper Introduces In-Store Nespresso Experience in South African Retail First. Checkers Hyper has launched a new in-store coffee concept at its Centurion Mall location in Tshwane, marking what the retailer describes as a first for South Africa’s grocery sector. The store now features a dedicated Nespresso shop-in-shop, bringing a premium coffee experience directly into a supermarket environment.
The concept introduces a specialist retail space where customers can explore Nespresso’s range of coffee blends, machines, and accessories while doing their regular grocery shopping. The move reflects a shift in how retailers are responding to evolving consumer preferences, particularly in categories where convenience and experience are becoming increasingly important.
Coffee continues to play a significant role in South African daily life. An estimated 22.7 million people drink coffee every day, making it one of the country’s most widely consumed beverages. The category has also seen strong growth, recording a 15 percent year-on-year increase in 2025. Projections indicate that it could continue expanding at close to 12 percent annually until 2029, driven in part by younger, urban consumers.
This group is showing a growing preference for premium and convenient formats, including coffee capsules and pods designed for home use. By introducing a Nespresso shop-in-shop within a grocery setting, Checkers Hyper is positioning itself to meet this demand more directly.
The Centurion Mall installation offers customers access to a curated environment within the store, combining product discovery with specialist knowledge. The approach blends traditional retail with elements typically associated with standalone premium coffee outlets.
Beyond the physical store, Nespresso products are also being integrated into Checkers’ digital ecosystem. Customers in select areas of Cape Town and Johannesburg can order Nespresso pods through the Checkers Sixty60 platform, with delivery available in as little as 60 minutes.
The retailer has confirmed that expansion plans are already underway. A second Nespresso shop-in-shop is scheduled to open at Checkers Hyper Paarl Junction in the Western Cape next month, indicating that the concept may be rolled out more broadly.
According to Checkers Chief Operating Officer Willem Hunlun, the initiative is aligned with changing customer expectations. He said the partnership with Nespresso allows the retailer to respond to growing interest in recreating café-style coffee experiences at home, while making premium options more accessible within a grocery environment.
Nespresso South Africa CEO Gabriel Nobre noted that increasing accessibility is central to the company’s growth strategy. He said the collaboration with Checkers supports an omnichannel approach, combining in-store availability with online access to reach more consumers conveniently.
