Leadership Transition at SAA as CEO John Lamola Prepares to Step Down

Leadership Transition at SAA as CEO John Lamola Prepares to Step Down. South African Airways (SAA) will undergo a leadership change at the end of April 2026, with Group Chief Executive Officer John Lamola set to step down from his role.
The resignation was accepted following a board meeting involving the airline’s leadership and Barbara Creecy, who acts as the shareholder representative. The process to appoint a permanent successor is expected to begin as the airline prepares for its next phase.
Lamola’s association with SAA began in July 2021 when he joined as a non-executive director and chairperson. He was later appointed group CEO in May 2022, assuming leadership as the airline emerged from business rescue and worked to stabilise operations in the aftermath of the global pandemic.
During his tenure, SAA focused on rebuilding its operational capacity and re-establishing its presence in both domestic and international markets. The airline expanded its fleet from five aircraft to 19 and increased its route network from six to 17 destinations. This included the resumption of long-haul routes such as São Paulo and Perth, alongside broader regional and domestic growth.
According to board chairperson Sedzani Mudau, Lamola played a central role in guiding the airline through a complex recovery period. His leadership was credited with helping reposition the airline following its restructuring phase.
As part of the transition, Matshela Seshibe has been appointed as acting group CEO. Seshibe currently leads Air Chefs, a subsidiary of SAA, and will oversee operations while the recruitment process for a permanent chief executive is underway.
The airline also confirmed the resignation of three board members, although further details have not been disclosed. The Minister has expressed confidence in the remaining board to continue executing their governance responsibilities during this period.
