Blending Passion and Purpose: How Bontle Tshole’s Baaa Smoothie Bar Became a Health Movement

Blending Passion and Purpose: How Bontle Tshole’s Baaa Smoothie Bar Became a Health Movement. Johannesburg-born entrepreneur Bontle Tshole spent years turning down unhealthy snacks during her work shifts. When friends and colleagues asked for her homemade lunches, she realized others shared her frustration. Her response? Launching Baaa Smoothie Bar in 2017, inspired by her psychology driver for balance and her mom’s business savvy.

Her debut at a pop-up market was electric: she sold out twice that day. It was the sign she needed to believe that healthy fast food could, and should, taste great.

Blending Health with an African Identity

Baaa Smoothie didn’t just offer smoothies. It carried flavors of Africa. Sorghum-based blends like “Bontle” and “Batho” embraced local crops and reflected cultural pride on packaging.

That authenticity became the brand’s heartbeat. By blending health with heritage, Bontle created a unique offering that resonated with customers on a deeper level.

Scaling Through Mentorship and Strategy

From humble beginnings, Bontle knew she needed business chops. In 2018, she joined the SAB Foundation Tholoana Enterprise Programme, selected from over 2,000 applicants. Initially revenue dipped, from R50,000 to just R650 but through mentorship and new skills, she grew monthly income to an average of R12,000.

This structured support, covering financial acumen, operations, and market navigation, helped transform Baaa Smoothie from a passion project into a strategized business.

Pivoting During the Pandemic

When COVID-19 hit in 2020, Bontle’s retail plans were halted. But her resilience shone through. She launched e-commerce, and even as demand shifted, she doubled down on her Vitality Shots, immune-boosting blends that flew off shelves as health consciousness rose.

This pivot not only kept Baaa afloat but helped it thrive, gaining recognition as a Sunlight “More Than You Expect Hero,” increased exposure, and boosted brand awareness through marketing support.

Landing Notable Milestones

  • Retail expansion: Baaa is now available at Spar and Food Lovers Market.
  • Awards & recognition: Bontle has been named to Forbes Africa’s 30 Under 30, won Gauteng Enterprise Propeller, Ekurhuleni Youth Summit awards, and was featured in Mail & Guardian’s 200 Young South Africans list.
  • Purpose in action: Bontle founded the Luminary Thrivist incubator to support young women entrepreneurs. That move extends her impact beyond her business, she is building a legacy of leadership and empowerment.
