Mugg & Bean Releases Statement On Speculations That It’s Closing Down All Their Restaurants. Ekurhuleni mayor Mzwandile Masina’s released a tweet on Sunday that stated that restaurant chain Mugg & Bean had decided to close its eateries across the country.

The tweet read, “Morning people of SA, as we are busy arguing why Zuma must be incarcerated, Mugg & Bean SA has announced its permanent closure in SA. Since the start of the pandemic, when are we going to start discussing problems that confront our people?”

The restaurant chain released a statement on their media platforms saying that the closure of their restaurants is fake news, the statement read, “We are aware of #fakenews doing the rounds. @Mugg_and_Bean is not closing. While sit down dining is not currently allowed, the majority of restaurants remain open to bring you your favourite M&B meals via delivery, collection and takeaway.”

Mugg & Bean is a full-service & On-The-Move restaurant, coffee-themed franchise restaurant chain originating from South Africa. The restaurant chain was founded in 1996 by Ben Filmalter after a visit to a Chicago coffee shop in the early 1990s inspired him to open a similar restaurant in South Africa. The first restaurant was opened at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town in 1996. The franchise was bought by Famous Brands in 2009. As of 2015 they had 184 outlets throughout South Africa and the rest of Africa, as well as a number of overseas operations, including the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced early this week, the country’s move to adjusted level 4 lockdown, amid a rising number of Covid-19 infections dominated by the more transmissible Delta variant. In the televised address, Ramaphosa said: “Restaurants and other eateries will only be permitted to sell food for take-away or delivery,” citing that this was necessary as it was impossible for patrons to wear masks while eating or drinking in these establishments.
