All Musica Stores To Officially Close Down In May 2021. The Covid-19 pandemic has been affecting businesses negatively since it started. Some businesses were forced to find alternatives as to how they would operate while others were forced to shut down as people are not frequently visiting the businesses as they were before the pandemic began. In South Africa, non-essential businesses were ordered to close as the country went into the first lockdown in March 2020. During this time businesses were not making profit that world keep their business running. Even after the lockdown restrictions were eased the virus had already gained momentum and people were wary about going out to public spaces. Businesses received fewer customers than usual but they still had the same operational costs that they had to cover such as paying its staff and paying rent. One of the businesses that suffered losses during the pandemic is the Musica music store, which sells CDs and related entertainment merchandise.
All Musica stores will close from 31 May 2021. Since the start of the year, 19 Musica stores have shut down while another 59 are currently trading. The rest of the stores will follow suit as leases expire in the four months leading up to the May 2021 deadline. Musica has been part of the Clicks Group since 1992.
The music store had already been on the decline as it was disrupted by digital technology as people are using digital platforms to listen to music. People have rarely been buying physical albums since the dawn of streaming and downloading music; the latter is a much more convenient way of accessing music as it does not require one to physically go to the store to purchase music.
“Owing to the structural shift globally to the digital consumption of music, movies and games from the traditional physical format, the inevitable demise of the brand has been accelerated by Covid-19, which resulted in the rapid decline in foot traffic in destination malls where Musica stores are located.” said Clicks in a statement.
