Absa and Feenix Partner to Clear Student Debt, Opening Pathways to Graduation

Absa and Feenix Partner to Clear Student Debt, Opening Pathways to Graduation. The Absa Group has partnered with the Feenix Trust to address a persistent barrier facing graduates across South Africa by clearing historical student debt at selected public universities.

Each year, many students complete their studies but remain unable to graduate due to unpaid fees from previous academic years. This outstanding balance, commonly referred to as historical debt, prevents students from accessing their certificates, obtaining official transcripts, or formally graduating.

Without these documents, graduates are often unable to pursue employment opportunities, delaying their entry into the workforce despite having completed their qualifications.

Through this partnership, Absa is settling verified historical debt directly with participating universities. The initiative focuses specifically on removing the final financial barrier that prevents eligible students from transitioning into economic activity.

Clement Motale, Interim Managing Executive for Corporate Citizenship at Absa Group, said the initiative is aimed at unlocking opportunities for young people.

He explained that when debt is removed, it creates a pathway for graduates to access employment and participate in the economy, particularly in a context where youth unemployment remains a significant challenge.

The programme applies strictly to historical debt and does not cover current year tuition fees. To qualify, applicants must have completed their qualification, and the outstanding balance must be the only reason they are unable to graduate.

By focusing on this specific group, the initiative targets individuals who have already fulfilled academic requirements but are held back solely by financial constraints.

The partnership forms part of Absa’s broader commitment to youth development and economic inclusion across the continent. By working with Feenix, a platform that connects funders with students in need, the initiative leverages an existing system designed to address funding gaps in higher education.

Students who believe they meet the criteria are encouraged to apply through the official platform. The application process includes reviewing eligibility requirements, completing the necessary documentation, and submitting the application online.

Through this collaboration, Absa and Feenix are aiming to support graduates in accessing their qualifications and moving forward into employment and economic participation, addressing a challenge that continues to affect many students across South Africa.
