The Business Lessons Behind VumileCooks and Vumile Magasela’s Entrepreneurial Journey

The Business Lessons Behind VumileCooks and Vumile Magasela’s Entrepreneurial Journey. Every successful entrepreneur has a defining moment when a challenge becomes an opportunity. For Vumile Magasela, that moment came during a period of unemployment. Instead of allowing financial hardship to determine her future, she turned the one skill she believed in most, cooking, into a business.
Today, Vumile Magasela is the founder of VumileCooks, a restaurant based at Durban’s North Beach that serves home cooked meals and caters to customers seven days a week. Her entrepreneurial journey has also expanded beyond prepared food with the launch of Spicy Much, a business producing spice blends and sauces.
Her story is not simply about building a restaurant. It is about recognising opportunities, adapting to setbacks and finding new ways to grow a brand without losing sight of its roots.
Turning Personal Skills Into a Business Opportunity
One of the most powerful lessons from Vumile Magasela’s journey is that entrepreneurship often begins with the skills you already possess.
After matriculating from Umlazi Comprehensive Technical High School in 2013, she pursued a qualification in television and screen media production. However, financial constraints forced her to leave her studies.
Rather than giving up, she focused on something she had always loved. Cooking.
Faced with unemployment and limited opportunities, she set up a table at a taxi rank in Montclair and began selling meals.
As she explained, she was unemployed, broke and had a skill for cooking, so she decided to use it.
For aspiring entrepreneurs, this demonstrates that businesses often begin with existing abilities rather than perfect circumstances.
Spotting an Opportunity Others Missed
Many entrepreneurs succeed because they notice gaps that others overlook.
Magasela recognised that the Montclair taxi rank did not have an “umama we-plate,” the woman known for selling freshly prepared meals to commuters. Instead of competing in an already crowded space, she stepped into an unmet need.
That decision became the foundation of VumileCooks.
The lesson is clear. Entrepreneurs should pay close attention to underserved markets. Sometimes the biggest opportunity is not creating something entirely new, but becoming the first to provide an existing service where demand already exists.
Adapting When Challenges Arise
Every growing business faces obstacles.
When Magasela could not obtain the municipal permit required to continue trading at the taxi rank, she did not allow the setback to stop her business. Instead, she shifted her strategy by introducing food deliveries.
This willingness to adapt kept the business moving forward rather than allowing regulations to end her entrepreneurial journey.
Flexibility remains one of the most valuable qualities any entrepreneur can develop. Markets change, regulations evolve and unexpected barriers emerge. Businesses that respond creatively often discover new growth opportunities.

Using Social Media to Reach New Customers
Marketing played an important role in the next chapter of VumileCooks.
After relocating, Magasela promoted her business through social media, helping her attract customers in office parks throughout Umhlanga, an area well known for its commercial activity and upmarket properties.
Instead of relying solely on passing foot traffic, she expanded her visibility through digital platforms.
This highlights an important lesson for entrepreneurs. Social media is not only a branding tool. When used consistently, it can help businesses reach entirely new customer segments and support expansion into different markets.
Growing Beyond One Revenue Stream
One of the most significant milestones in Magasela’s entrepreneurial journey came three years after launching her first business.
She established Spicy Much, a company producing affordable spice blends and sauces. The business currently offers nine spice blends, including Ndlunkulu, one of the few curry mixes in South Africa owned by a black woman. She has also introduced a hot sauce.
The move into packaged products solved a challenge she had previously identified.
Customers from places as far as Johannesburg had discovered her food through social media but could not easily experience her cooking. Through Spicy Much, she found a way to package the flavours people had come to associate with her brand.
For entrepreneurs, this demonstrates the importance of listening to customer demand and identifying opportunities to expand beyond the original business model.

Building Consistency Before Chasing Scale
Today, VumileCooks operates from Durban’s North Beach and serves about 50 plates every day, seven days a week.
This consistent service reflects the importance of building operational stability before pursuing larger ambitions.
At the same time, Magasela has shared her vision of franchising VumileCooks and expanding the Spicy Much range into supermarkets.
These goals illustrate another important entrepreneurial lesson. Sustainable growth begins with establishing a business that consistently delivers value before exploring larger expansion opportunities.
Lessons Every Entrepreneur Can Apply
Vumile Magasela’s journey offers practical lessons for anyone building a business.
Start with the skills you already possess instead of waiting for ideal circumstances.
Look for opportunities where customer needs remain unmet.
Treat setbacks as reasons to adapt rather than quit.
Use social media to reach audiences beyond your immediate location.
Expand thoughtfully by creating additional products that complement your existing brand.
Most importantly, continue thinking beyond today’s business while maintaining the quality that attracted customers in the first place.
A Journey Defined by Resilience and Growth
From selling meals at a table in a Montclair taxi rank to owning a restaurant at Durban’s North Beach, Vumile Magasela has demonstrated how resilience, adaptability and determination can transform a simple idea into a growing business.
Through VumileCooks and the expansion into Spicy Much, she has continued to build on her passion for cooking while finding new ways to reach customers beyond her restaurant. Her story shows that successful entrepreneurship is not about avoiding challenges but responding to them with creativity and persistence.
For aspiring business owners, Vumile Magasela’s journey is a reminder that every successful brand starts somewhere. With a valuable skill, a willingness to adapt and the courage to seize opportunities, even the most modest beginning can become the foundation for lasting entrepreneurial success.
