What began as a simple response to a pressing community challenge has grown into a bakery business with ambitions far beyond its hometown. Nomsa Mohantle founded Mohantle Pty Ltd after recognising that many residents in Postmasburg’s West End struggled to access fresh, affordable bread. Today, the business has built a loyal customer base by combining quality, affordability and a commitment to serving its community. In this interview, Mohantle shares the story behind the company’s journey, her philosophy of mindful baking, the changing preferences of South African consumers, the challenges of growing a small bakery, and her vision for expanding Mohantle Pty Ltd into a trusted brand while continuing to make wholesome, freshly baked products accessible to more communities. Read all about it below!
What inspired you to establish Mohantle Pty Ltd, and what gap in the bakery market were you hoping to fill?
Mohantle (Pty) Ltd was inspired by a real need within my own community. In Postmasburg’s West End, many residents struggled to access affordable, freshly baked bread because the local retailer often sold out due to high demand. People had to wake up as early as 6:00 a.m. and wait in long queues just to buy a loaf of bread. while others had no choice but to buy more expensive branded bread, which wasn’t always possible. I saw an opportunity to make a difference by providing quality, affordable baked products closer to where people live, what started as a solution to a community challenge has grown into a business that serves households, workers and local businesses every day.
The concept of “mindful indulgence” is central to your brand. How would you define it, and why do you believe it resonates with today’s consumers?
For us, mindful indulgence means enjoying freshly baked products made with care, quality ingredients and balanced flavours. It’s about giving customers food that is satisfying and comforting without relying on excessive sweetness or unnecessary ingredients. Consumers are becoming more conscious of what they eat, and they appreciate products that offer both quality and enjoyment while supporting healthier everyday choices.
Your products focus on flavour depth and ingredient integrity rather than excessive sweetness. How do you develop recipes that strike this balance without compromising on taste?
We believe great baking starts with great ingredients. Rather than masking flavours with sugar, we focus on bringing out the natural taste of quality ingredients, using fruits, oats, spices and other wholesome additions where appropriate. Every recipe is tested until it delivers the flavour, texture and freshness our customers expect. The aim is to create products that people genuinely enjoy while feeling good about what they are eating.
The press release highlights changing consumer attitudes toward sugar and balanced eating. What trends have you observed among your customers that support this shift?
More customers are asking about ingredients and looking for products that fit into a balanced lifestyle. They still want to enjoy baked goods, but they’re becoming more intentional about their choices. We’ve found that customers appreciate products that are freshly baked, made with quality ingredients and not overly sweet. They want food that tastes homemade and authentic rather than heavily processed.

Many people associate comfort food with rich, sweet treats. How is Mohantle redefining what comfort food looks and tastes like, particularly during winter?
For us, comfort food is about warmth, freshness and bringing people together. During winter, there’s nothing more comforting than freshly baked scones straight from the oven. We focus on products that are filling, flavourful and made with care. Comfort isn’t just about sweetness, it’s about providing food that families can enjoy every day and that reminds people of home.
What role do ingredients such as fruit, oats, nuts and spices play in your baking philosophy, and how do they contribute to creating a more mindful indulgence?
These ingredients allow us to create flavour naturally while adding texture and nutritional value. Fruits provide natural sweetness, oats offer fibre and heartiness, nuts add richness, and spices bring warmth and depth. Together, they help us create baked products that are both enjoyable and thoughtfully prepared, giving customers a more balanced way to indulge.

As the founder of Mohantle Pty Ltd, what have been some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced in building a bakery that prioritises both enjoyment and conscious eating?
Like many small businesses, one of the biggest challenges has been growing with limited resources while meeting increasing demand. Operating from my home required careful planning to maintain consistent quality and production. At the same time, educating customers that quality baking doesn’t have to be overloaded with sugar has taken time. Receiving support from MTN has significantly improved revenue and traffic, and working towards obtaining our Certificate of Acceptability will help us access larger supply opportunities and continue growing.
How do you educate consumers about the idea that indulgence and wellbeing can coexist, especially in a market where healthier options are sometimes perceived as less enjoyable?
The best education comes through experience. When customers taste our products, they realise that quality ingredients and balanced recipes don’t mean compromising on flavour. We also engage with customers directly, explaining our approach to baking and why we prioritise freshness, quality and balance. Over time, we’ve built trust by consistently delivering products that people enjoy.

Beyond your products, what impact do you hope Mohantle Pty Ltd will have on South Africa’s bakery industry and the broader conversation around healthier food choices?
I hope Mohantle shows that small businesses can solve real community challenges while creating economic opportunities. We’ve grown from serving our neighbourhood to supplying local businesses, including funeral parlours, and building a loyal customer base of SAPS members, municipal employees and mine workers. As we continue to expand, I want our business to encourage more local entrepreneurs to invest in their communities while proving that quality, affordable baking can also support healthier choices.
Looking ahead, what are your growth plans for Mohantle Pty Ltd, and can customers expect any new products or innovations that continue your vision of mindful baking?
We’re entering an exciting stage of growth. In addition to expanding our range of quality baked products, we’re preparing to open another bakery stall in Greenfield, Postmasburg, to make our products more accessible. We’re also working towards securing our Certificate of Acceptability, which will enable us to compete for larger public and private sector supply contracts. Our long-term vision is to grow Mohantle into a trusted bakery brand that is known for quality, affordability, innovation and its commitment to serving local communities.
