Bloemfontein Edtech Startup Selected for Global AWS Social Entrepreneur Accelerator

Bloemfontein Edtech Startup Selected for Global AWS Social Entrepreneur Accelerator. A Bloemfontein-based education technology startup has secured a place in Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) latest Social Entrepreneur Accelerator programme, joining a global cohort of 42 organisations from 16 countries.

FunHouse Digital, founded by Ayabulela Yokwana, is one of nine African organisations selected for the fourth edition of the accelerator, making Africa the most represented region in this year’s intake.

The programme is run by AWS in collaboration with Deloitte and is designed to support mission-driven organisations through technical training, business development guidance and ongoing advisory support. According to AWS, the initiative has worked with more than 100 social entrepreneurs across 34 countries since its launch in 2023.

Recognition for South African innovation

FunHouse Digital was selected for its work in combining technology, education and community development. The startup operates gaming lounges that help fund coding and digital literacy programmes in rural communities, creating opportunities for young people to access technology-related skills.

The company joins a diverse group of organisations from across Africa, including participants from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania and Cameroon. The selected organisations are focused on addressing a range of challenges, including education, digital skills development, employment creation and broader social impact initiatives.

AWS said this year’s cohort reflects the growing role that technology and innovation are playing in tackling social and economic challenges around the world.

Support for growth and scaling

Through the accelerator, participating organisations will gain access to AWS cloud technologies, technical expertise and business advisory support. Deloitte will also provide consulting services aimed at helping participants strengthen their operations and prepare for future growth.

The programme brings together social enterprises from multiple regions, including Africa, the United States, Australia, India and the United Kingdom.

According to AWS, the accelerator is intended to help organisations scale their impact by equipping them with tools, knowledge and support that can strengthen their solutions and expand their reach.

Jyoti Ball, General Manager for Sub-Saharan Africa at AWS, said the strong African representation in the programme highlights the growth of entrepreneurship across the continent and the increasing need for access to technology and support systems that can help organisations grow beyond their local markets.

At the conclusion of the programme, participants are expected to apply the skills, training and resources gained through the accelerator to further develop and scale their initiatives.
