Fleurhof Mall Opens in Johannesburg, Bringing Major Retail Hub to 9,000 Homes
Fleurhof Mall Opens in Johannesburg, Bringing Major Retail Hub to 9,000 Homes. Fleurhof Mall has opened its doors in Gauteng, introducing a new retail and services destination to one of Johannesburg’s major integrated housing developments.
The 19,561 square metre centre was jointly developed by Abcon Developments and Masingita Property Investment Holdings and is anchored by Pick n Pay, Shoprite and Edgars. The mall also includes national retailers, restaurants, banks and other services.
Located on Fleurhof Drive, the mall is positioned to serve residents of Fleurhof, Robertville and Meadowlands, while also attracting customers from Florida North, eastern Robertville and Roodepoort North.
The opening follows a construction period that created more than 1,000 jobs. It comes after more than 9,000 housing units, including RDP houses, social housing and private developments such as Legacy Hill Estate, were delivered in the surrounding area over the past decade.
Further development phases are under way, alongside new schools, green space and a community centre.
Bryce O’Donnell, managing director of Abcon Developments, said Fleurhof had experienced significant residential development without a major retail centre serving the community.
“Fleurhof has spent 10 years building rooftops without a retail centre to match them,” said O’Donnell.
He said residents had previously travelled to Roodepoort or Soweto for basic shopping and services, adding that the mall provides convenience and access to a market he described as underserved.
The centre’s tenant mix includes Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Edgars, Dis-Chem, Clicks, banks and various fashion retailers. The development also includes space for smaller local businesses.
Mike Nkuna, founder and chairman of Masingita Group of Companies, described Fleurhof Mall as an economic corridor between Soweto and the West Rand, saying it provides opportunities for residents and small businesses.
For Abcon, the development adds to a Gauteng portfolio that includes Sandton Gate Central, Loftus Park, Leaping Frog Retail Centre and Hertford Office Park.
Masingita’s retail portfolio totals 230,000 square metres across Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga and includes Masingita Mall, Makhado Crossing, Boitumelo Junction, Mphephu Plaza, Zebediela Plaza and Stimela Crossing.
Fleurhof Mall is now open to the public, with 53 stores already trading. Additional tenants are completing their fit-outs and are expected to open over the coming weeks.
