BlackBerry Devices Set To Stop Operating From The 4th Of January 2022. Smartphone manufacturer BlackBerry has announced that it’s devices running the original operating system will stop working from the 4th of January 2022. This marks the end of an Era where the company had once dominated the smartphone market. As of this date, devices running these legacy services and software through either carrier or Wi-Fi connections will no longer reliably function, including for data, phone calls, SMS and 9-1-1 functionality.

According to the company, the termination of these service offerings and infrastructure will also impact functionality for applications such as Enhanced Sim Based Licensing (ESBL) / Identity Based Licensing (IBL), BlackBerry hosted email addresses, BlackBerry Link, BlackBerry Desktop Manager, BlackBerry Blend, BlackBerry Protect (allows consumers to lock, locate or wipe BBOS, BlackBerry 10 devices remotely. There is no impact to the new BlackBerry Protect which is an AI-based endpoint security solution).

In 2016, BlackBerry Executive Chairman and CEO John Chen announced that the company’s transition to a software company was complete. Since then, the company has made great strides executing on its business strategy and today, it is focused on providing intelligent security software and services to enterprises and governments around the world. BlackBerry is a brand of smartphones, tablets, and services originally designed and marketed by Canadian company BlackBerry Limited (formerly known as Research In Motion, or RIM). Beginning in 2016, BlackBerry Limited licensed third-party companies to design, manufacture, and market smartphones under the BlackBerry brand.

The introduction of this brand to the market brought about a lot of impact not only in the smartphone industry but also in the urban youth culture as the devices made it easy for users to use social media. These devices played a huge role in spreading the popularity of social media, thus the company left a significant impact which will be remembered forever.
