Capitec Expands Smart ID Self-Service Terminals

Capitec Expands Smart ID Self-Service Terminals. Capitec Bank has officially launched a Smart ID application service in selected branches, following a successful pilot phase conducted in partnership with the Department of Home Affairs.
The new service allows Capitec clients to apply for a Smart ID card at self-service terminals located in participating branches, without the need for prior bookings. The application process is fully digital and directly integrated with Home Affairs systems. Once processed, applicants are notified when their ID is ready for collection at the same branch.
Capitec confirmed that the rollout will expand to approximately 100 branches by mid-2026, significantly increasing access points for South Africans seeking identity documents.
According to Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber, more than 4.4 million South Africans over the age of 16 currently do not possess either a green ID book or a Smart ID card. He noted that expanding application sites through partnerships with banks could help reduce travel distances and long queues at government offices.
The Department of Home Affairs currently operates 349 offices nationwide, with 190 offices able to process Smart ID applications. Capitec’s branch network will now complement this infrastructure, offering additional convenience to citizens.
The system used in Capitec branches connects self-service terminals directly to Home Affairs, ensuring applications are submitted digitally and securely.
The application fee is R150, which includes the standard R140 fee charged by Home Affairs and a R10 service fee by Capitec.
This initiative marks a significant step in modernising access to essential identity services, combining government systems with private sector reach to improve efficiency and accessibility for millions of South Africans.
