From Township Stylist to Natural Beauty Pioneer: What Nubian Nature Taught Us

From Township Stylist to Natural Beauty Pioneer: What Nubian Nature Taught Us. Shereen Makhanye’s story isn’t a textbook startup tale, it begins with simple, deeply human roots. Growing up in a South African township, she was known as the “local stylist,” turned scientist in her own mind, passionately experimenting with what nature offered. She had dreamt of science, adored hair, and carried a deep reverence for Africa’s indigenous crops. This blend of curiosity and culture set the stage for Nubian Nature.

A Spark Born from Frustration

By 2012, Shereen had decided to embrace her natural hair and refuse harmful chemicals. But the local market offered nothing that honored African hair textures. Frustrated yet determined, she embarked on a costly research journey. The result? The founding of Nubian Nature in 2013, co-owned with a partner. Her singular mission was clear: create safe, effective hair-care from African botanical wisdom.

The First Crucible: Partnership and Reinvention

By December 2013, the initial partnership had unraveled. Without shareholder agreements, the venture was vulnerable. Faced with failure or reinvention, Shereen chose the latter. She overhauled both formulations and branding in September 2014, giving birth to a new identity for Nubian Nature. The rebirth was marked by a sharper vision and renewed confidence.

The Leap: Leaving the Corporate World

Until 2015, Shereen balanced Nubian Nature with a corporate job. Despite her divided focus, the business pressed on. She soon realized entrepreneurship doesn’t clock out, there is no 8-to-5 schedule. In September 2015, she quit her day job to fully commit.
Leaving the safety of a regular income was daunting, but it was essential for authentic, sustained growth.

Crafting the Brand’s Identity: Clean, African, Affordable

Shereen’s brand stood out because it wasn’t based on global fads, it was rooted in African integrity. Nubian Nature’s products are free of alcohol, parabens, sulfates, mineral oil, petroleum, and cruelty. Instead, they are grounded in exotic African crops, responsibly harvested, and lovingly formulated for moisturized, strengthened, nourished hair.

Expansion and Market Validation

The range grew steadily, by 2019, Nubian Nature offered about 15 products including beard grooming kits, body scrubs, lotions, and more. Prices were deliberately accessible: affordable luxury, meant to serve everyday people without breaking the bank.

Building Distribution: From Salons to Global Markets

Nubian Nature embraced a hybrid sales model. Online e-commerce linked it directly to consumers, while natural hair salons and barberships offered physical access.

Shereen also took Nubian Nature to international platforms, exhibiting in Australia, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Dubai, and Kenya. Each venture offered marketing insights: for instance, the body-care range resonated well in Morocco, while beard products were better received elsewhere. Based on feedback, she began considering expanding hair-care to Caucasian hair types.

Green Ethos and Consumer Education

Though the brand already embodied eco-friendly practices, from biodegradable formulations to recyclable packaging, obtaining official green certification was hampered by costs. Shereen emphasized the importance of educating consumers amid growing misinformation in natural-product spaces.

Lessons for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

1. Build from personal passion and lived experience. Shereen’s struggle was genuine, and her solution had soul and authenticity.
2. Reframe setbacks as reinvention. When partnerships falter, transform and rebrand.
3. Go all in when ready. You can only grow fast when fully committed.
4. Honor your roots. Let culture and ethical sourcing define your identity.
5. Balance affordability with quality. Make excellence accessible.
6. Blend e-commerce with physical channels. Especially in niche markets, salon partnerships can be powerful.
7. Test globally, adapt locally. Listen to different markets and adjust product fit.
8. Invest in trust and education. Especially in natural sectors, empowering consumers builds loyalty.

The Unfolding Journey Continues

Today, Nubian Nature is more than a brand, it’s a celebration of African science and self. From township styling to natural-beauty pioneer, Shereen’s journey shows that successful brands grow from authenticity, resilience, and a vision anchored in identity. Her story invites entrepreneurs everywhere to dream, act, and honor their roots along the way.
