Interview With ZOR Restaurant South Africa Managing Director: Andile Zulu

Following the highly anticipated media launch of ZOR, Johannesburg’s newest fine dining destination, one thing became clear, this is not just a restaurant; it’s a movement redefining what African luxury feels and tastes like. Through the seamless fusion of food, sound, and storytelling, ZOR invites guests into an experience that celebrates heritage while embracing modern sophistication. At the recent “A Night of Flavours & Sounds” event, guests were treated to a sensory journey that reflected the brand’s essence, a bold expression of culinary innovation, contemporary design, and cultural confidence. Behind this ambitious vision stands Andile Zulu, the entrepreneur and creative force whose journey from the world of hospitality management to founding his own luxury dining brand embodies resilience and purpose. Startup Mag sat down with Zulu to unpack the story behind the recent launch, ZOR’s creation, his mission to elevate African dining to global standards, and the philosophy that continues to drive his pursuit of excellence. Read all about it below!

Congratulations on an incredible launch! What inspired the concept behind ZOR, and how does it represent the evolution of African fine dining?

Thank you -ZOR was born from a desire to redefine how Africa experiences itself through taste, texture, and design. We wanted to create a space that celebrates African excellence with contemporary sophistication, where heritage meets haute cuisine. ZOR represents an evolution in fine dining because it treats African ingredients not as nostalgic artefacts, but as luxurious expressions of global standard. It’s Africa on its own terms -confident, cultured, and unapologetically elegant.

You’ve described ZOR as a celebration of Africa’s evolving palate. How do you balance traditional African flavours with modern haute cuisine?

Our approach is rooted in culinary storytelling. We respect the authenticity of traditional ingredients: sorghum, baobab, rooibos, amadumbe, but we reinterpret them through modern techniques and presentation. It’s not about reinventing Africa; it’s about elevating her through precision, innovation, and pride. Every dish is a dialogue between heritage and modernity.

The launch theme, “A Night of Flavours & Sounds,” beautifully merged culinary art and music. What was the creative thought process behind combining these two elements?

Flavour and sound both evoke emotion. We wanted the evening to feel like a sensory symphony; each course and musical performance amplifying the other. The idea was to feed both the palate and the soul. The rhythm of the live band, the plating, the lighting and everything was orchestrated to create a single immersive narrative of African excellence.

You partnered with BMW Bryanston for the guest experience. How did this collaboration come about, and what does it say about ZOR’s vision of luxury?

The partnership with BMW Bryanston was a natural synergy: both brands represent precision, performance, and prestige. For ZOR, luxury isn’t about exclusivity; it’s about experience with meaning. BMW elevated our guests’ arrival moments, symbolising that African luxury is not only about what’s on your plate, but how you are made to feel from the moment you arrive.

The gold-and-black aesthetic of the event exuded elegance. What was the design inspiration behind this look, and how does it reflect ZOR’s identity?

Gold represents Africa’s richness- her warmth, creativity, and soul. Black embodies depth, power, and timeless style. Together, they mirror ZOR’s duality: bold yet refined, rooted yet futuristic. The design language was inspired by the concept of “modern tribal luxury” a fusion of heritage motifs and contemporary minimalism.

As the founder, what was your biggest priority in curating the ZOR experience for guests the food, the ambiance, or the storytelling?

The storytelling. Food and ambiance are tools, but storytelling is what leaves a memory. We wanted guests to not just taste a meal, but feel a journey of African innovation, emotion, and pride. Every detail, from the menu design to the music selection, told a story of who we are and who we’re becoming.

The event brought together media, celebrities, and cultural tastemakers. How important is community and influence in shaping the ZOR brand?

Community is everything. ZOR was created as a table where culture and influence meet where conversations about creativity, identity, and Africa’s future happen organically. The people who attended the launch are not just guests; they are co-authors of the ZOR story. Influence, for us, is not status- it’s shared purpose.

ZOR seems to go beyond dining -it’s described as a “temple of taste.” What emotional or cultural experience do you hope guests take away after dining at ZOR?

We want guests to leave feeling seen, inspired, and proud to be African. Dining at ZOR should feel like stepping into a mirror that reflects the continent’s finest qualities innovation, warmth, creativity, and excellence. It’s about emotional connection – a sense of belonging dressed in luxury.

How did working with Simphiwe Majola & Associates elevate the storytelling and event execution for this launch?

Simphiwe Majola & Associates brought an extraordinary layer of vision and precision to our story. They understood that ZOR isn’t just a restaurant- it’s a movement. Their storytelling, event architecture, and ability to align aesthetics with emotion gave the launch its cinematic feel. The “Architect of Presence” touch was evident in every detail.

The menu was said to tell a story through each course. Could you share a highlight dish or pairing that truly represents the spirit of ZOR?

One standout dish was the Afro-Herb Crusted Lamb paired with a cranberry jus and sweet potato purée. It’s a conversation between tradition and innovation – familiar flavours refined with haute technique. It’s comforting yet elevated, much like ZOR itself.

African luxury is often redefined through fashion and design — how do you believe ZOR contributes to that conversation through food and experience?

Fashion and design articulate how we see ourselves; food articulates how we feel ourselves. ZOR contributes to that dialogue by turning African cuisine into an art form that’s aspirational yet authentic. We’re proving that African luxury can be plated, savoured, and shared – not imported or imitated.

Hosting such an exclusive media launch sets a strong tone. What can future patrons expect when they visit ZOR after this grand reveal?

They can expect consistency in excellence refined service, soulful food, and a story told through every sensory detail. But most importantly, they can expect presence. Every visit to ZOR will feel intentional – an escape from the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Beyond fine dining, does ZOR plan to host themed events, culinary collaborations, or art-inspired evenings in the future?

Absolutely. ZOR will become a cultural hub -we’ll host intimate jazz dinners, art-led culinary collaborations, and themed evenings that celebrate African icons. We see ZOR as a living gallery of flavours and ideas a home for creativity in all its forms.

You mentioned that ZOR is about “emotion, energy, and identity.” How do those three values guide your approach to hospitality and customer experience?

Emotion reminds us to serve with heart. Energy keeps us curious and dynamic. Identity grounds us in authenticity. These three pillars ensure that every guest feels not just served but understood. That’s the essence of true hospitality.

Looking ahead, how do you envision ZOR’s role in positioning Johannesburg — and Africa as a whole — as a global destination for luxury dining and cultural excellence?

Johannesburg is Africa’s heartbeat -ZOR aims to be one of its most resonant notes. We want to help position the continent as a global player in luxury dining, not by imitation, but by excellence rooted in identity. When global travellers think of fine dining, we want them to think of Africa first.
