Inter-Hotel Challenge 2026 Opens New Opportunities for South Africa’s Rising Hospitality Talent

Inter-Hotel Challenge 2026 Opens New Opportunities for South Africa’s Rising Hospitality Talent. Young hospitality professionals from across South Africa are set to sharpen their skills and expand their careers as the Inter-Hotel Challenge returns for its 2026 edition, bringing together hotels, industry experts and suppliers to support the country’s next generation of hospitality leaders.
The annual programme provides chefs, bakers, pastry chefs, food and beverage professionals, wine stewards, concierges and other hospitality practitioners with mentorship, practical training and competitive opportunities designed to strengthen their professional development.
This year’s programme welcomes Union Tiles as the headline partner and will conclude with the annual Awards Gala on 1 December 2026.
Annette Kesler of Showcook, organisers of the Inter-Hotel Challenge, said the initiative was established 14 years ago to create meaningful opportunities for young professionals to grow within the hospitality industry.
She said it had been rewarding to see the programme develop over the years and witness participants go on to build successful careers after taking part in the competition.
The 2026 programme brings together 35 hotel partners alongside food and beverage suppliers, industry judges, guest speakers, mentors and South African wineries. Throughout the competition, participating hotels will be paired with winery partners, allowing contestants to showcase their expertise while strengthening the relationship between hospitality, food and wine.
Gary Shayne, CEO of Origin Enterprises Ltd and owner of Union Tiles, said supporting the initiative represents an investment in the future of South African hospitality. He said the programme not only recognises talent but also creates opportunities for young professionals to develop meaningful careers while contributing to exceptional guest experiences.
Hotels participating in the challenge dedicate time and resources to mentoring candidates throughout the programme, helping prepare future leaders for South Africa’s hospitality and tourism sectors.
Patrick Fisher, general manager of Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, Cape Town, described the Inter-Hotel Challenge as an important platform for nurturing emerging talent. He said mentorship, continuous learning and practical experience help participants develop the confidence and skills needed to succeed in a competitive industry.
The programme has also helped shape long-term careers. Ndaba Dube, now director of new business and partnerships at the President Hotel, first competed in 2013 as a wine steward candidate before later becoming a mentor and judge in the Young Stars Programme. He credited the competition with broadening his understanding of career opportunities within hospitality.
Participants will work alongside executive chefs, hospitality leaders, wine producers and tourism professionals while developing both technical expertise and leadership skills.
The programme is also supported by several industry partners. Philip Abrahamson, CEO of Clearworld Suppliers, said the organisation’s sponsorship will provide the winning wine stewards with access to sommelier training and certification opportunities to support their professional development.
The Inter-Hotel Challenge South Africa 2026 launches in July, with events scheduled to take place in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban before concluding with the Awards Gala on 1 December 2026.
