Transnet Engineering Signs R6.6bn Wabtec Deal to Improve Locomotive Reliability

Transnet Engineering Signs R6.6bn Wabtec Deal to Improve Locomotive Reliability. Transnet Engineering has signed a R6.6 billion long-term agreement with Wabtec covering components, technical support and digital monitoring for two locomotive fleets used to transport freight across South Africa.
The Material and Technical Support Agreement covers Transnet’s Class 43D (C30Aci) and 44D (ES40Aci) locomotives. The fleets transport export commodities, containers and general freight across the country.
Under the agreement, Wabtec will supply components and technical expertise to Transnet Engineering, alongside predictive maintenance capabilities aimed at supporting locomotive performance and fleet management.
The package includes Wabtec’s Expert-on-Alert digital condition-monitoring platform. The platform is designed to monitor locomotive conditions and support maintenance planning, with the stated aim of improving performance and maintenance turnaround times.
Transnet Engineering CEO Bessie Mabunda said the agreement supports Transnet’s Reinvent for Growth strategy and its efforts to improve locomotive fleet performance.
“The 43D and 44D locomotives serve critical freight corridors that move export commodities, containers and general freight across South Africa. Strengthening their reliability and availability will help improve service delivery, support freight recovery and enhance the country’s logistics competitiveness,” Mabunda said.
The agreement also includes technical collaboration between the two companies, as well as knowledge transfer and localisation initiatives.
According to Transnet Engineering, these elements are intended to strengthen local rail capabilities, develop industry skills and support the long-term sustainability of South Africa’s rail sector.
The two locomotive classes covered by the agreement operate on freight corridors that serve the movement of commodities and other goods. Improving their reliability and availability forms part of Transnet Engineering’s focus on locomotive fleet performance.
The R6.6 billion agreement brings together physical components, technical support and digital monitoring as part of the support package for the two fleets.
The partnership also places emphasis on technical knowledge transfer and localisation, with the stated objective of strengthening capabilities within South Africa’s rail industry.
