Sentech Equips Gqeberha Primary School with Ramped-Up Digital Learning Facilities

Sentech Equips Gqeberha Primary School with Ramped-Up Digital Learning Facilities. Communications and Digital Technologies Minister Solly Malatsi is scheduled to unveil a new computer laboratory at Soutpan Primary School in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, as part of efforts to expand access to digital learning.
The facility has been established through Sentech’s Socio-Economic Development (SED) Programme, which aims to improve access to digital education opportunities and equip learners with skills needed to participate in an increasingly connected world.
The new laboratory is equipped with 40 tablets, 10 computers and 40 headsets. Additional equipment includes tablet covers, desks, chairs and a storage trolley. The classroom has also been refurbished and fitted with air conditioning.
The facility will have access to the internet through very small aperture terminal (VSAT) connectivity, with three years of connectivity provided to support access to online educational resources.
The official unveiling will bring together representatives from the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, Sentech, the Department of Higher Education and Training, Eastern Cape education authorities, the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality and the school community.
During the visit, Malatsi is expected to officially unveil the laboratory and interact with learners as they demonstrate how they use the new facilities.
The initiative forms part of Sentech’s broader SED efforts to expand digital learning opportunities. By providing computer equipment and internet connectivity, the project aims to give learners access to technology-enabled educational resources.
The inclusion of tablets and computers provides learners with access to digital devices, while the provision of headsets and classroom furniture supports the laboratory’s learning environment.
The three-year connectivity arrangement is also intended to enable learners to access online educational resources through the facility.
The project highlights the role of digital infrastructure in addressing the digital divide and expanding opportunities for learners through technology.
The unveiling at Soutpan Primary School will mark the formal presentation of the facility, bringing together government departments, education authorities and the school community around the digital learning initiative.
