Stellantis South Africa Urges Immediate Action on Outstanding Takata Airbag Recalls

Stellantis South Africa Urges Immediate Action on Outstanding Takata Airbag Recalls. Stellantis South Africa has confirmed that approximately 25 vehicles in the country are still subject to an outstanding recall linked to defective Takata airbag inflators, with the company reiterating strong safety warnings to affected motorists.
The local recall forms part of a wider global Takata airbag recall campaign, which has impacted multiple vehicle manufacturers worldwide. Stellantis South Africa said the recall affects several of its brands, including Citroën, DS, Chrysler, Jeep, Opel and legacy Chevrolet models.
According to the company, driving a vehicle fitted with an unrepaired Takata airbag presents a serious safety risk. Stellantis warned that faulty inflators can malfunction, potentially leading to severe injury or death if the airbag deploys during a collision.
The Takata airbag defect has been linked to what is widely regarded as the largest vehicle recall campaign in automotive history. Other manufacturers, including Ford, Toyota, Honda and BMW, have also issued recalls related to the same defect.
Stellantis South Africa said it has been engaging affected customers for several years and has replaced a significant number of defective airbag inflators as part of the recall programme. While notable progress has been made, the company acknowledged that a small number of vehicles remain unrepaired.
As a result, the Stop-Drive warning remains in effect for vehicles with outstanding airbag replacements. Stellantis has urged owners of affected vehicles to immediately stop driving and to arrange repairs as soon as possible.
The company emphasised that all replacement work is carried out at authorised service centres and is provided free of charge to customers. No payment is required for parts or labour associated with the airbag replacement.
Vehicle owners are encouraged to confirm whether their cars are affected by visiting their manufacturer’s official website and entering their vehicle identification number in the designated recall portal.
Stellantis South Africa reiterated that addressing the recall is critical to ensuring driver and passenger safety.
